Hyeonpan (hanging boards) were hung from the eaves of ancient architectural structures, including the royal palaces. These boards inscribed with the names of buildings relate their purposes and uses. 
Hanging boards on buildings related to the Joseon royal court, including the royal palaces, Jongmyo Royal Ancestral Shrine, and royal tombs, present aspects of the ideal Confucian society sought by the Joseon Dynasty. They feature words and phrases with positive connotations that harmonize with the characteristics of the buildings and the objectives underlying their construction.
The color, calligraphy, and design of royal hanging boards reflect the aesthetics of the time of their creation. In 2018, the hanging boards in the collection of the National Palace Museum of Korea were inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Asia Pacific Regional Register for their historical, architectural, and artistic value. This exhibition aims to explore the Confucian ideals and values that the Joseon royal court pursued and exalted through these royal hanging boards.
