At the time of the foundation of the Korean Empire, Korea was experiencing an influx of Western culture and customs by the way of foreign consulates, churches, and schools in Seoul. The automobiles that became the trendy commodity of the high class in the West and Japan began to be used by the imperial family as well. Two automobiles used by the imperial family in the 1910s survive today, an American General Motors and a British Daimler.

circa 1918, State-registered HeritageVehicle of Emperor Sunjong
This General Motors Cadillac limousine was used by Emperor Sunjong(r.1907~1910). The body is made of lacquered wood instead of coated metal and the doors are further decorated with plum blossom symbolizing the Imperial Family of Korean Empire. Yellow patterned with plum blossoms covers the interior of the vehicle. Its overall resemblance to a carriage is typical of early automobiles.

circa 1914, State-registered HeritageVehicle of Empress Sunjeong
This limousine was used by Empress Sunjeong(1894~1966). The body is made of lacquered wood, the same material as Emperor Sunjong’s limousine. Plum-blossom motifs decorate the doors and the interior is covered with the plum-blossom patterned silk. It is one of the last three surviving models in the world.
