This is the portrait of young King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776) portrayed10 years before his enthronement. It was a reward for the Prince’s efforts totake care of his father, King Sukjong (r. 1674-1720) at his sickbed day andnight for eight months in 1714. The prince is depicted wearing a black hat anda green ceremonial robe, which were typical for the portraits of meritorioussubjects painted in the 17th century. However, the status of theprince is recognized by the insignia with a mythical creature baektaek (白澤) painted in gold– this being a symbol of a prince of Joseon. As the only extant portrait of aJoseon prince in his formal attire, this is a valuable source for the study onthe techniques of royal portraiture of the time.
