This is a portrait of King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776), the 21stking of Joseon. The 51-year-old king is dressed in a red dragon robe and acoronet while gazing slightly to his right with his hands crossed. Thisportrait is a replica by Chae Yong-sin (1850-1941) and Jo Seok-jin (1853-1920),produced shortly after the royal portrait hall in Changdeokgung Palace wasburnt down in 1900. This copy was based on his portrait painted in 1744 that was kept in the shrine of his mother.
The portrait figure was also painted on the back of the silk, thereby enhancing the elegant color tones and expressing the royal majesty anddignity of the king. Although this portrait is a copy made from an earlier one,it is still a valuable source in the study of Joseon royal portraiture as itreflects the efforts made by the top painters of the time to reproduce faithfulcopies. It is also a rare example of a surviving royal portrait.
