This portrait was painted in 1861 when King Cheoljong (r. 1849-1863)was 31.
The king is seated on a chair, wearing a military uniform includinga hat with a peacock feather attached. The insignias on the chest and shouldersof the uniform are embroidered with a dragon design. Inscribed on the upperright of the portrait is his handwriting which reads, “My portrait at the ageof thirty-one”, as well as his shrine and posthumous honorific titles. YiHan-cheol (1812-1893) and Jo Jung-muk (? -?) served as chief portraitists forthe production of this portrait.
