This protocol is a minute account of Emperor Gojong’s enthronement in October 1897. The book contains considerable relevant details: the proclamation of the Korean Empire, the list of officials involved in the publication of the protocol, discussions between the king and ministers regarding the transformation of the Joseon Dynasty into the Korean Empire, the actual process of Emperor Gojong’s ascension to the throne, the procedures and programs of the grand ceremonies, the list of the seals and the inscriptions on them, all the items used, expenses, etc. As the first imperial protocol produced soon after Joseon was transformed into an imperial state, the book is a document of great importance providing a comprehensive overview of the conditions of the time calling for change to an imperial state.
