Joseon wangjo uigwe (the Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty) is a vast collection of books with text and illustrations recording the details of important royal rituals and ceremonies of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). First compiled during the reign of King Taejo (r. 1392-1398), uigwe continued to be produced until the early Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). The uigwe produced before the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598), however, were lost during the aggressions, and thus only the books compiled after the war are extant.
While Korea was under Japanese rule (1910-1945), the uigwe of 167 volumes organized into 81 types were removed and sent to Japan, and in 2011, 133 volumes of 80 types were finally returned from the Imperial Household Agency of Japan. The books were designated as treasures in 2016 and the National Palace Museum of Korea currently houses them.
This book documents the production of new royal seals whose originals were consumed by fire at Gyeongbokgung Palace. Doseol (圖說, illustrations and explanations) given in the book offers detailed text about and illustrations of the seals and their storage boxes.
