In Pursuit of the Aesthetic Legacy of Goryeo Dynasty

The National Palace Museum of Korea is pleased to present a special exhibition of eight pieces of artworks from the Goryeo Dynasty that are part of the collections of the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, Belgium. This exhibition has been organized to mark the completion of the conservation and restoration treatment of the eight works. Some 200,000 objects of Korean national heritage are currently being housed at overseas institutions in more than twenty countries. The Cultural Heritage Administration and the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation in Korea have been conducting the “Overseas Cultural Heritage Conservation and Utilization Support Project” to ensure that this Korean national heritage has its condition examined in a timely manner to secure its preservation and appropriate utilization. Works that complete conservation and restoration programs are presented to the public through exhibitions and related symposia at home and abroad. In this light, the project plays an important role in sharing the aesthetics and historical value of traditional Korean culture worldwide. This year, eight works that underwent conservation and restoration treatment at the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will be presented to the Korean public prior to being returned to their home institution in Belgium. The exhibition will offer an opportunity to discover the meaning and beauty embedded in these Goryeo craftworks that have been restored to their original state.
