Encounter with the Brilliant Scientific Technology of the Joseon Dynasty
Insadong, Seoul. In June 2021, precious artifacts that invites us to look into the scientific technologies of the early Joseon Dynasty have been excavated. This exhibition displays all 1,755 pieces of artifacts unearthed from the site.
The discovered artifacts include 1,600 pieces of metal type from early Joseon Dynasty, the instrument for determining time by the sun and stars, components of an astronomical clock, and hand cannon. They all demonstrate the state-led developments in science and technology. How did these artifacts come to be discovered in Insadong? What would they have looked like in their days? How were they used in real life? We have so many questions that need to be answered.
It will take more time and effort to provide answers to these questions, as well as conduct scientific processing for safe keeping and conservation of the artifacts.
With this in mind, this exhibition aims to achieve two goals; first, it will share all 1,755 pieces of artifacts with the general public, and and second, the exhibition will provide an opportunity for further studies of the found artifacts through the classification and accumulation of photographic and video data.
We hope you will enjoy this exhibition as you meet the magnificent scientific artifacts from early Joseon that have finally come to shine.
